Keep Moving Forward
We are all experiencing an unprecedented time. When dealing with an ordeal of this magnitude it is very normal to feel a wide range of emotions such as annoyance, disbelief, astonishment, anger, depression and/or anxiety. For me the biggest challenge is dealing with the most crippling of all emotions - fear.
Fear can paralyze. Fear can stop us in our tracks and prevent us from moving forward in a positive direction. I encourage everyone in these trying times to face your fear with courage. Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is moving forward in spite of your fear.
Be courageous by moving forward and living your life as normally as possible. Try to keep your normal routines. Get up at your regular time, shower, get out of your pajamas and try to seize each day with a positive attitude. Keep yourself busy, find things to do that challenge yourself mentally in a constructive way. Obsessing by binge watching the news networks' Coronavirus Pandemic Coverage is not a good idea. I am not saying you shouldn't stay informed, but bombarding yourself with negativity for hours on end is not the way to go.
Isolation increases fear. Social distancing is the correct course of action to deal with this crisis. But, distancing ourselves from others can compound the negative emotions we feel. I want everyone to know that you are not alone. We are all in this together. Even if we can't physically be with others, we can still stay in touch. Reach out to others. Let them know how you are feeling and listen to how they feel. Now would be a great time to call that old friend you haven't been in touch with for a while.
A self-imposed quarantine can cause havoc on your mind and your body unless you make a real effort to engage in mental and physical exercise. Many of you no longer have access to a gym. It is imperative that you continue to get physical exercise in some manner. Find some way to work-out. Try body weight exercises like push-ups, sit-ups, lunges and jumping jacks. Now might be a great time to try a new stretching or yoga routine. If you can stay at least 6 feet away from other people while doing it; get outside and walk, hike, ride your bike or run. Whatever it takes to stay in shape - do it.
It is very easy in a time like this to adopt negative habits. Don't fall down the slippery slope and end up in the gray abyss of mediocrity. Now is the time, more than ever, to challenge yourself to be great. Keep eating good foods, keep working out and keep getting good sleep. This is the time when we face our fears and use courage to continue to live positive and constructive lives.
